Surviving “Fogust” Early: A Renter’s Guide to SF Summer

July 1st, 2026  \\  RentSFNow Blog

There’s an old line about San Francisco summers being colder than anywhere else. While we can’t confirm who said it first, anyone who’s worn shorts to a July barbecue in the Sunset knows the feeling is real.

San Francisco doesn’t really have one summer. It has about a dozen happening at the same time, just a few miles apart. Knowing which one your neighborhood is having can save you a lot of confused outfit choices, and maybe even change where you decide to live.

Meet Karl (Again)

Karl the Fog is San Francisco’s most consistent resident. He rolls in through the Golden Gate most evenings, hugs the coastline, and puts on a quiet show over Ocean Beach before retreating by midday. Karl is moody, a little dramatic, and shows up almost everywhere eventually. But they’re not hitting everywhere equally.

Where the Weather Actually Goes

San Francisco’s hills block fog in some spots and funnel it straight through others.

  • Karl’s home turf: The Sunset, the Richmond, and the Outer Richmond near Lake Merced get the fog first and keep it longest. Great if you sleep better cold, less great if your summer plans involve a rooftop tan.
  • The wind belt: Downtown, Nob Hill, and the Tenderloin don’t get heavy fog, but they get wind funneled straight between buildings. The thermometer might say 68, but it will feel like 58 with a 20-mph headwind. What you trade in calm air, you make up for in being steps from everything: transit, restaurants, nightlife, and work.

What This Means If You’re Renting

A few practical takeaways if you’re apartment hunting this season:

  • Don’t assume you need AC. Plenty of classic SF buildings get by without it, and our mild temps are a big reason why. If you’re moving from somewhere hot, it’s a genuine adjustment, but it’s also why your energy bill stays low year-round.
  • Check unit orientation. A south or west facing unit will catch more of whatever sun is available. If natural light matters to you, ask about it on your tour.
  • The “real” summer is coming. August is peak fog, but September and October are our warmest, sunniest months of the year. Moving in during the summer means you’re perfectly settled just in time for the actual beach weather.

The Fog (and Wind) Isn’t the Enemy

Once you stop fighting it, San Francisco’s weather is one of the city’s better features. It keeps things cool when the rest of California is baking, makes for excellent sleeping weather, and turns your apartment into the perfect excuse for an indoor evening. A breezy walk through Downtown or Nob Hill in July just means you’ll want a jacket, not that you’re missing out.

So, if you land somewhere foggy or a little windy, don’t think of it as missing out on summer. Think of it as getting San Francisco’s best kept seasonal secret: comfortable weather, fewer crowds outside, and a built-in reason to enjoy your own space, or everything right outside your door.
