Giving Back is the New Stepping Out: Your April Weekend Guide to Volunteering in SF
April 1st, 2026 \\ RentSFNow Blog
Looking for a fresh way to meet your neighbors and explore the city? While we love a good brunch or a park hang, April is National Volunteer Month. It’s the perfect excuse to get outside, do something meaningful, and connect with the community that makes living in San Francisco so special.
Whether you want to get your hands dirty in a garden or help stock a local pantry, we’ve mapped out your weekends with easy ways to show SF some love. Grab a friend (or head out solo to make new ones) and check out these local opportunities.
Saturday, April 4 | Morning at the Pantry
Kick off the month by helping the SF-Marin Food Bank fight hunger. Their warehouse shifts are high-energy and a great way to see the scale of impact we can make when we work together.

Sunday, April 12 | Coastal Cleanup & Coffee
Spend your Sunday morning at the edge of the world. Refuse Refuse SF hosts fantastic community cleanups that feel more like a social gathering than work.
- The Task: Join the crew at the Upper Great Highway & Judah from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. They are the perfect pre-sunset activity, and you’re right by some of the best coffee shops in the Outer Sunset.
- Sign Up: Find a Cleanup Near You
Saturday, April 18 | Earth Day in the Parks
This is the big one. With Earth Day right around the corner, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy kicks off its “Spring Days of Service.”
- The Task: Head to the Presidio or Lands End for habitat restoration. You’ll be helping maintain the trails and native plants that make our “backyard” world-famous.
- Sign Up: Register for Earth Day Events
Sunday, April 26 | Garden Preservation
Wrap up the month with a little bit of history. The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy often has shifts available to help maintain historic landscapes that most people only see from behind a fence.
- The Task: Help out at the Alcatraz Historic Gardens or Sutro Heights. They are a unique way to experience SF history while keeping these cultural landmarks beautiful.
- Sign Up: Browse the Volunteer Calendar
Pro-Tips for RentSFNow Residents:
- Sign Up Early: These shifts fill up fast.
- Dress the Part: SF weather is unpredictable. Layers and closed-toe shoes are your best friends.
- Stay Local: Check the Refuse Refuse calendar for “1-hour cleanups” that might be happening just a block or two from your front door.
Tag us in your volunteer photos! We love seeing how our residents make an impact across the city.
